Apple TV: A Turn On or a Turn Off?
Apple TV first came out in 2007. On October 26, the 4th generation of the Apple TV was released. The hardware has stayed the same, but the software has been updated fourfold, so essentially we’re looking at a whole new product. And whereas the quality has increased the price has decreased. But is it worth it? We all watch TV, but should we switch to the Apple brand? This article looks at the latest update of Apple TV to answer that question.
SPECS
Ok, the new Apple TV, let’s talk about it. Or rather, let’s talk to Siri. She’d tell you that the world’s favourite brand’s long-awaited 4th generation Apple TV features an A8 processor and 32 to 64GB of storage. It has a brand new operating system called ‘tvOS’, which allows you to take your relationship with a deeply-integrated Siri to a whole new level. Connecting via HDMI to compatible television sets, the Apple TV has a full App store and a touch-based remote control that doubles as a game controller. The 32GB version is priced at $149 and the 64GB version priced at $199. To date the Apple TV has been launched in 80 countries, which Apple will extend to 100 by the end of the year. It can be purchased from the online Apple Store and from Apple’s retail stores.
DESIGN
The new Apple TV is twice the size of the previous version, but aside from the lack of an optical audio port the hardware is essentially the same. But the all-new remote is completely different. Made of a slick fusion of aluminum and glass, it has a built-in microphone and works with Siri, and also includes an accelerometer and gyroscope that turns it into a pretty sweet mini game controller. The top section is a touchpad with five buttons below it: menu, home, Siri, play/pause, and a handy volume button that works directly with your TV. The remote utilises Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology and has a rechargeable battery providing months of battery life on a single charge.
EXPERIENCE
The 4th generation Apple TV runs tvOS, a new operating system designed specifically for the latest Apple TV version. It brings an iOS 9-style redesign to the TV set and is aimed at expanding the available content making it easier for users to find new movies, TV shows, and games to watch, follow, and play. To make it easier for you to navigate, the Apple TV includes Siri support on the remote for searching for content by voice command. The remote has two microphones for picking up on your instructions to Siri. For your viewing pleasure and convenience, search capabilities allow users to search through multiple apps at once to find what they’re looking for. Search iTunes, HBO, and Netflix simultaneously using one app. Nice.
In conclusion, Apple TV is a small and powerful media streamer offering great value with lots of online content that keeps increasing its capability and compatibility. It has a faster processor, ample storage, an awesome, multi-purpose remote, a stylish interface, and useful voice controls to enhance your experience. Yes, you’re paying a premium, but it’s worth it. Buy it. You won’t go back.
