Edging Ahead of the Competition: The Samsung S7 Edge

On the cutting edge. An edge above the rest. Edging ahead of the competition. A…uh…OK, thought we had another one there… But wordplay aside, the Samsung S7 Edge is a fantastic product. It has received rave reviews for its best-in-the-biz camera, a battery of superhero stamina, waterproofing, excellent storage capacity, and a slick new design with more curves than Marilyn Monroe. Samsung has listened to their customers and taken the blueprint of last year’s S6 and S6 Edge and improved them in just about every way. Let’s move closer and peer over the edge.

THE SPECS

On the outside, the S7 Edge, following on from the glass and metal redesign of the S7 and S6, is a good-looking design. I mean, if it was humanized, the S7 Edge’s curvaceous form would certainly turn heads. On the inside, the S7 and the S7 Edge are the same. The CPU, memory, storage configuration and cameras are identical. Breaking down the specs, the S7 Edge has a slightly larger 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with the same 2560 by 1440 pixel resolution for a pixel density of 534 ppi. It measures 5.94 inches by 2.86 inches by 0.3 inches and weighs 5.54 ounces. A larger screen allows for a larger battery, and the S7 Edge has a 3600-mAh battery, sealed inside the phone. With minimal battery drainage, you can have notifications display even when the phone is sleeping or shut down. The battery lasts around a day and a half, which is significantly better than the daily charging most other smartphones require. Wireless charging and quick charging are also available.

THE EDGE

The S7 Edge is, in essence, a refined version of the S7, with a slightly larger design and an eye-catching curved screen. It’s powerful and compact, with all the latest features expected (and demanded) of the latest smartphone. And it’s fast. Like Speedy Gonzalez on uppers fast. The S7 and S7 Edge are equipped with Samsung’s Exynos 8890 octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM. Navigation is smooth and effortless and loading times are virtually non-existent. The S7 Edge has 32GB of internal storage, and Samsung have added a microSD slot so you can expand this to 200GB. If you’re a heavy user with all the latest apps, then this expandable storage is a necessity more than an option.

Unlike Apple, Samsung doesn’t sell its products directly to the consumer; instead, you can buy the S7 Edge through your phone provider. Prices vary depending on your plan and payments options, but the approximate price for the S7 Edge is around $799, with the S7 around $100 cheaper. It’s well worth the additional cost to live life on the Edge.

THE CONS

On the con side, the S7 Edge is pricier than other smartphones with similar capabilities and one of the major complaints is the oversensitive touch screen. The batteries are sealed, so you can’t swap them. And some users are asking why the latest Samsung product still has no USB 3.0 speeds.

But with incredible battery life, fast performance, and a great screen, the S7 Edge is currently the best Android phone on the market. Nuff said.
