Countdown to the Launch of the iPhone 7

Countdown to the Launch of the iPhone 7

Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 7 in early September and, as you might expect, rumour is rampant with regards to this next-generation smartphone. We can expect a faster processor, better camera, potentially the elimination of the 3.5mm headphone jack, and a revised chassis that will reduce visible antenna bands. We’re pumped about the much anticipated release of the 7, so we’ve scoured the rumour mill, viewed all the leaked images, and dissected all the hype to bring you a 10-step countdown about the iPhone 7. So without further ado, let’s count it down.

10 – SIMILAR BUT DIFFERENT

The latest rumours on the design of the iPhone 7 is that it is expected to look largely identical to the iPhone 6s, and, as with last year’s flagship, the latest iPhone will come in two sizes – one with a 4.7-inch display, and one with a 5.5-inch display (for the iPhone 7 Plus).

9 – POWER PLAY

Because the iPhone 7 will likely arrive with Apple’s iOS 10 software and an upgraded processor called the A10 chip, it will offer even more power and better efficiency, although it’s uncertain yet how much of this power will translate into actual usage. The iPhone 7 could come equipped with a 7.04Whr battery, an upgrade from the 6.61Whr in the iPhone 6s.

8 – APPEARANCE

Reports suggest the iPhone 7 will be even thinner than current models, potentially between 6.0 to 6.5mm thick. Some rumours claim the device will move away from an all-metal construction to a new as-yet-unknown material, possibly ceramic, though definitely not Kryptonite.

7 – CAMERA UPGRADE

Recently leaked images of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus show the 7 having a 12MP rear-facing camera and the 7 Plus sporting two 12MP cameras on the back, which appears to confirm rumours of a dual-lens camera for the bigger device. To what may be a disappointment to some, it looks like both models carry over the ‘camera bump’ seen on the iPhone 6 and 6s.

6 – NO JACK BACK

One of the most persistent rumours is that Apple will remove the headphone jack from the new iPhone 7 and use the Lightning port instead. This means that instead of plugging your headphones directly into your phone, you would have to carry around an adapter with you everywhere you go. Or use wireless headphones, either Lightning or Bluetooth.

5 – WATERPROOF FEATURE

Details are sketchy, but the iPhone 7 may or may not be fully waterproof, which would be an evolution from the iPhone 6s, which is only partially water-resistant. (And even if it isn’t fully waterproof, you’re in luck because Fix My Touch can repair all water damage.)

4 – GIGA-WHO?

Rumours suggest that Apple is planning to ditch its lowly standard 16GB storage option in favour of a more generous 32GB for the iPhone 7 to keep pace with the rest of the smartphone market. This would certainly be an improvement, as you currently have to pay more for an additional storage upgrade to 64GB or 128GB. Many people would love for Apple to raise the baseline storage.

3 – RELEASE DATE

It’s rather an open secret that the iPhone 7 will be revealed on Wednesday September 7th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for news too about the release of the iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch 2. Pre-orders are expected to open on Friday September 9th, with sales to commence one week later on September 16th.

2 – PRICE

The iPhone 7 will be free! Sorry, only kidding. Would be awesome though, wouldn’t it? You don’t need us to tell you that iPhones don’t come cheap, and there’s nothing to suggest that the iPhone 7 will be any different. Though exact prices haven’t been released yet, expect to pay around US$649.

1 – NEXT GEN NEXT YEAR

It’s a fact that much of the iPhone 7 technology is already present in other handsets. And the latest touches we’re so looking forward to, such as OLED displays, a curved screen, and all-glass chassis to go with the front and back covers will not be part of the iPhone 7. Rumours are that these major tech upgrades will appear next year in 2017, at the iPhone’s tenth anniversary special.
