Should You Care About AppleCare+ for Your iPhone?
Apple gives anyone buying a new phone with the stamp of the world’s most deliciously profitable digital fruit a 1-year hardware warranty and 90 days of complimentary phone-based tech support. If something goes wrong, Apple will pay for repairing or replacing your iPhone. But, let’s face it, most repairs or replacements need to happen after the expiration date, so what happens when you go beyond the protective veil of the standard warranty? Apple’s answer is AppleCare+ for your iPhone. This article discusses what AppleCare+ covers, what it costs, and whether it’s worth your hard-earned, Apple-stained dollars.
Broken screens happen. Chances are you’ll suffer one too along the way. Apple’s standard warranty only covers you against damage and defects that could have been Apple’s fault. It won’t cover you against any accidental damage; in other words, if you break it, you’re on your own.
AppleCare+ costs $99 for iPhone 6 and earlier models and $129 for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. It extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone. You have 60 days after you purchase your iPhone to decide whether you want to add AppleCare+. If you buy a new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus with Apple’s Upgrade Program, you get complimentary AppleCare+ coverage.
AppleCare+ adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $79 for iPhone 6 or earlier models and $99 for iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. We completely understand that this extra expense for repairing or replacing your phone – which is in addition to buying AppleCare+ in the first place – may seem expensive, but it’s still a way cheaper option than buying a new iPhone. Yes, you could get a case for your iPhone, but those aren’t fail-safe, and the ones that claim to be are very bulky. Also, even with a case, chances are your iPhone won’t be protected from water damage. With AppleCare+ you get accidental damage coverage that includes water damage, a broken screen, and even complete destruction when your extreme phone pinching dare ends in tears (though don’t tell Apple that because all replacements should be because of accidents, not dares).
Another great reason to get AppleCare+ is that if you’re noticing that your battery life is shorter than it used to be when it was new, you can get the battery or your entire iPhone replaced for free. AppleCare+ (and the standard 1-year warranty) is good worldwide. You can go to any Apple Authorized Service Provider worldwide and get service – or ship it, if you aren’t near a provider. And if you have any problem doing anything on your iPhone, you can call technical support for 2 years. In addition, AppleCare+ is fully transferable, so if you sell your phone or buy a new one, AppleCare+ will transfer to the new owner. Having AppleCare+ as an option may make selling your old phone a bit easier; it’s certainly a useful additional selling tool.
AppleCare+ may not be right for everyone, but for the less tech-savvy among us (and there still are a few around, we know), having a toll-free number to call can be a welcome bonus if something goes wrong with your iPhone. In such a case the cost of parts is often higher (sometimes much higher) than the purchase and protection offered by AppleCare+.
